Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the core of the Brown Family Environmental Center. They create the programs and facilities that allow the BFEC to reach its goals. BFEC volunteers come from both the Kenyon College community (students, staff, and faculty) and the larger Knox County community.

To Volunteer or for more information phone the BFEC at 427-5050 or email: Jill Kerkhoff @ kerkhoffj@kenyon.edu
Here's how you can help!
Elementary Education Program: Annually the elementary education program introduces over a thousand Knox County children to a variety of environmentally related topics. Volunteer group leaders are needed in the Spring and Fall to help elementary groups explore their local environment.
BFEC Gardens: From spring to fall the BFEC gardens are a busy place. Volunteers help with planting, weeding, growing seedlings, composting, and greeting visitors. It is a wonderful place to spend a few hours.

Trails and Invasive plant removal: The trail system at the BFEC is continuing to expand as is our invasive plant control effort. Mostly in the Spring and Fall, volunteers remove fallen branches or trees, trim back invading vegetation, remove patches of invasive exotic plants and replace missing trail markers.

This work can be physically demanding but it also has its rewards.

Bluebird Monitoring: In 1999 the BFEC started a Bluebird trail that is monitored for nest success during the Spring and Summer. This provides an opportunity to contribute to a long-term study of the nesting success of bluebirds.

Prairie Burn: In the Spring we burn the prairie. Volunteers are needed to help establish a fire edge and keep the fire contained.

Special Events and More: Every Year, the BFEC hosts a variety of special events including the Earth Day Health Expo, The Earth Day Marathon, Kokosing Scenic River Day, The Fall Harvest Festival and others. These events wouldn't be possible without the help of dedicated volunteers!

There's also never a shortage of tasks to complete around the Visitor Center Year-Round. If you're looking for another way to contribute, contact us about what's going on behind the scenes!
