Potential Visitors to Bluebird Boxes

Female Bluebird resting near nest box

Swallows will use bluebird boxes as nesting sites. Swallows use grass for their nests but also add feathers. The feathers are placed so they curve up over the eggs. Swallow eggs are pure white and range from 4-6. Swallow nests are generally not removed from bluebird boxes.

House Wrens will also use bluebird boxes. The male wren will construct a nest of sticks over the bluebird's grass nest then a female wren will construct a grass nest on top of the pile of sticks. The nest will contain 5-8 eggs that are white and heavily speckled with small reddish or brown dots. House wren nests should be removed.

While some visitors prevent bluebirds from using their box, others can actually harm the nesting bluebird. The bird pictured below was probably killed by a sparrow. You can see the damage to the head and wing. Predator control devices can be installed to help prevent the loss of bluebirds.
