Gray Hairstreak
(Strymon melinus)
This small butterfly can be found in open areas near the BFEC. Note the long tails associated with the hindwings. Like the Eastern Tailed Blue, this species rubs its hindwings together when perched. The dorsal surface of the wings is dark making it difficult to follow when in flight. The eye-spots on the hingwing may help deter predators.
