Great Spangled Fritillary
(Speyeria cybele)

This species can be seen throughout the summer months visiting flowers at the garden. The color of this species can range from orange to a deep brown as shown above. The underside of the hindwing is marked with silver spots and has a broad tan band . This band helps distinguish it from the slightly smaller Aphrodite Fritillary which has a very narrow band or lacks it entirely. The much smaller Meadow Fritillary lacks the silver spots on the hindwing and is more commonly seen in grassy areas.
