The Southern Cloudy Wing is a large brown skipper that has not been reported from Knox County, but has been reported from surrounding counties. The one pictured here was photographed in early August, 1999. The peak flight period for this species is May through June with numbers decreasing from July through August. It tends to be most common along forest margins, but ventures into pastures and gardens in search of nectar. Here it is seen visiting purple coneflower and butterfly bush. This species can be distinguished from the Northern Cloudy Wing, which is common in Knox County by the prominent hourglass shaped spot below the triangular spot on the forewing. In the Northern Cloudy Wing this spot is missing or reduced to a small spot.
