Tawny Emperor This butterfly has not previously been reported from Knox County. It was photographed in a pasture bordered by a hardwood forest. Tawny Emperors are more common in western Ohio where they are found in open areas bordered by dry forests or along streams. They are often found associated with hackberries, which are the host plant. Although they visit flowers they tend to rely primarily on fermenting tree sap, rotting fruit and nutrients found in damp soil. Superficially they resemble the Hackberry Butterfly, but their wings tend to be darker orange and they lack a dark eye-spot on the forewing. |
